5.1 Assess student learning. Demonstrate understanding of assessment strategies including informal, diagnostic, formative and summative approaches to assess student learning. These assessment approaches need to be used throughout the learning cycle and draw upon each other to produce a fair and valid assessment of each student.

Diagnostic - to establish what a student may need help with. Remedial work or a misconception.
Formative - to help a student to move forward, conducted during a learning sequence.
Summative - conducted at the end of a compete learning experience to ascertain if the student has grasped the concept and that learning has taken place.

It is important to provide feedback while the topic is still fresh in the student's mind and also so that they can correct any errors early on.

In the below example, several students used the word "like" incorrectly, showing that they did not yet understand the use of the word like as a comparison. The example on the right also shows some misunderstanding when using words to make complex sentences. These assessments are used to predict future lesson planning and revision.

5.5 Report on student achievement.
Demonstrate understanding of strategies for reporting to students and parents/carers and the purpose of keeping accurate and reliable records of student achievement.
Tests can be sent home and signed, projects, classwork, visual displays, class worksheets, Naplan, WA government testing and homework. All assessment items must be marked and returned to students with feedback. Accurate records must be kept by the classroom teacher as evidence or clarification required by parents. The records also record student progress as required by individual schools and the Department of Education. They provide evidence to parents and other relevant parties and are a very important record of the teaching and learning cycle.
