Daily in class journal- 10 days practical Focus: child development
Day 1: small group work. Under performing children.
Reading : Marooned sailor.
Looked at title and author. Discussed what story was about. Asked class to bear in mind what they would do if they found themselves in the same situation as the sailor. Discussed possible feelings that they might have and what measure could be taken to problem solve the situation.
Group reading.
Group discussion and individual responses to the issues mentioned prior to reading the text.
Activity: Draw the southern cross and explained how to determine which direction was south.
Curriculum links: English and Society?
Children listened and gave some examples of how they would feel and what they would try to do to find their way home. Drew southern cross and showed interest in how to find where south was. Then they got bored and seemed keen to free draw.
Day 2: small group work. Under performing children.
Reading: Stripes and Spots.
Looked at front cover, title and author. Discussed what book was about. Several pictures of animals with stripes and spots but limited wording. A visual text.
Group reading.
Activity: Drew and spoke about other animals or insects that had stripes or spots and also the possible purpose of theses colours and patterns, i.e. camoflage.
Curriculum links English and Society & environment.
Children were not keen to write down words. One child became very talkative and somewhat disruptive. I later realised that the behaviour was likely because he could not spell or write very well. However when questioned about animals gave quite detailed and interesting answers. Hard to get children to concentrate and not continually talk amongst themselves. They were keen to do free drawing or go out to play.
Day 3: Small group work. Under performing children.
Grammar/ writing: Use of "and" as a conjunction.
Discussed how we can join two ideas together by using the word "and".
Examples were modelled on the whiteboard,
Children provided with a phrase and the conjunction "and" then asked to brainstorm some realistic endings to the sentences.
Day 4: One on one teaching
Maths: Addition of numbers involving three place value
Explained the units, tens and one hundreds columns.
Explained the relevance and representation of a numeral in a specific column.
Explained how to carry a number.
Modelled addition of numbers.
Assisted student carry out addition.
Observed student to solve addition problems.
Student came to understand addition involving three place value.
Student requested to move on to numbers involving four pace value.
Day 5: Whole class observation.
Grammar: Revision of conjunctions. Students completed individual worksheets.
Day 6: Whole class teaching
Literature: Evaluation of a modern day fairy tale.
Group reading and discussion, highlighting similarities and difference between characters.
Highlighting similarities and differences between traditional fairytale.
Note: Fairytales have been the genre studied this term.
Explained to students the difference between literal and inferential questions and the application of knowledge to a new situation.
Students completed part one of the work sheet i.e, literal questions.
Day 7: Team teach whole class
Science activity: Demonstration of sedimentary rock formations under pressure.
Group discussion and brainstorming about how sediment involves and forms rocks by depositing layers over long periods of time.
Students in groups of 5 used bread, cheese and lollies to represent layers of sediment, fossils, dead fish and other remains. The representation was recorded by drawing.The height of the layered sample was measured, then exposed to pressure, using books and a new measurement taken. The results were recoded. Students used a straw to drill through their sample and observe the newly formed layers. Then they ate the sandwich!!
Day 8: Whole class teaching
Literature: Modern day fairytale - Discussion about meaning of Inferential questions.Science metamorphic rock formation, discussion and computer research.health, selection of most effective add to prevent people taking up smoking.
Day 9: Team teach
Health: view video and select most effective add to prevent people taking up smoking. Discussion of
health issues in relation to tobacco.
Day 10: Team teach
Science metamorphic rock formation, discussion and computer research.health, selection of most effective add to prevent people taking up smoking.
Week 6 Term 3 - Year 5 on route to their 3 day excursion at Barn Hill.
