Subject Outline:
  • Building on Teaching and Learning 1, this unit provides foundation knowledge to help students understand and respond to situations in the course of designing, delivering and evaluating learning experiences. The unit focuses on understanding and using child and adolescent development to inform teaching and learning in a variety of school and early childhood contexts. 
    Week 1 - Introduction to child and adolescent development
    Week 2 - Cognitive and moral development
    Week 3 - Memory, intelligence and language acquisition
    Week 4 - Social and emotional well-being
    Week 5 - Development of sex differences and gender roles
    Week 6 - Family, peers, media and schooling
  • Learning Outcomes for this unit are an understanding of the - 
  • Key theories and principles of child and adolescent development and learning.
  • Sequences and processes that underpin child and adolescent development. Interdependence of aspects of development - physical, cognitive, emotional and social.
  • Ways in which developmental knowledge and research informs educational policy and teachers’ planning and practice. Child and/or adolescent development knowledge in planning, implementing and evaluating student learning.

What I have learnt:
Teaching and Learning and hence lesson planning are dependent upon the development stage of the child/ren
Learning is best achieved in a secure stimulating environment.
Equity is paramount and is achieved through tolerance, knowledge, understanding and use of a variety of teaching strategies that address individuality, different learning styles, children with special needs and recognition of diverse backgrounds.
